Normal stress is not a problem, but chronic stress is an enormous difficulty! Our bodies react to stress by the adrenal glands pumping out the stress hormone Cortisol. This can be a good thing because it prepares us for the "fight or flight" response. However, when our bodies misread a stress cue, and there is nothing to fight or run from, but instead the stress is coming from our own thought patterns, worry, negativity, and fears; this is chronic stress.
It is called chronic because the glands do not recognize the stress as ever ending; therefore, they continue to pump stress hormones into the blood stream. Think of chronic stress as if it were an acid. This kind of stress affects each organ in our bodies including our brains, and every cell.
Chronic stress causes aging, illness, mental misery. It has been documented to cause 85-95% of all office visits to physicians. Chronic stress causes forgetfulness, indecisiveness, and makes it almost impossible to concentrate. It causes headaches, muscle aches, can spike blood pressure. It can make you fat and provoke skin problems. And these are only a few of the symptoms!
